The Compound Learning Strategy — Why What You Learn Now Multiplies Later
Most professionals treat learning as linear — more input, more output. Compound learning is different. Here's how to build a learning system that accelerates itself.

Einstein — or someone plausibly attributed to Einstein — called compound interest the eighth wonder of the world. The same principle applies to learning, and the professionals who understand this early build advantages that become impossible to close later.
Compound learning is not about learning more. It's about learning in a way that makes the next round of learning faster, deeper, and more connected.
The Linear Model vs. the Compound Model
Most professional learning is linear. Read the documentation. Complete the course. Attend the training. Each unit of learning is relatively independent. The effort is roughly proportional to the output.
Compound learning is different. It builds a lattice of connected knowledge where new information connects to existing knowledge, which creates richer understanding, which makes the next new piece easier to acquire and more powerful once acquired.
The neuroscience is straightforward: learning is physically easier when it connects to prior knowledge. The connections are the compound return.
Building the Lattice
The key discipline in compound learning: never learn in isolation. Always connect new knowledge to something you already know.
I do this explicitly. When I'm learning a new technology — Cloudflare Workers, for example — I don't just learn the API. I ask: how is this similar to things I already know? How does the edge runtime model relate to my mental model of request/response cycles from AEM dispatcher? What principles from my experience with multi-site CMS architecture apply here?
The connections I build are real, specific, and they make the new knowledge stick and integrate faster.
The Documentation Advantage
Knowledge that you've articulated is more accessible, more durable, and more useful than knowledge that lives only in your head.
Writing what you learn forces you to understand it well enough to explain it. The explaining process surfaces the gaps — the things you thought you understood and didn't. And the written artifact is available to you, and others, in ways that mental knowledge isn't.
I document everything I build and everything I learn while building it. Not for an audience — for future me. The notes I wrote on a problem I solved in February are worth hours of re-learning in September.
The AI Amplifier
This is where personal AI infrastructure enters: an AI that knows your existing knowledge lattice can accelerate the connection-building process.
When I'm learning something new, I use my AI to explicitly ask: how does this connect to what I already know? What are the analogies to systems I've already built? Where are the gaps in my understanding that would prevent me from applying this correctly?
That conversation doesn't replace the learning — it compresses it. The connections that would take weeks of application to develop through experience can be surfaced in hours through deliberate inquiry.
